held September 16, 1956. The Social Democratic-Farmers' League coalition government of Prime Minister Tage Erlander was formed after the election because of a majority in the chamber of the liberal People's Party, Peasants' League and the Rightist Party. The social democrats however held a majority in the other chamber so a non-socialist government could not be formed in the government negotiations. The coalition parties would later split due to disagreements over the pensions system in 1957, which led to the formation of Tage Erlander's third government and a snap election in 1958.
