. It came into being on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998. Its administrative seat and largest town is Świdnik
, which lies 10 kilometres (6 mi) east of the regional capital Lublin

, lying 14 km (9 mi) south-east of Świdnik.
The county covers an area of 468.97 square kilometres (181.1 sq mi). As of 2006 its total population is 72,290, out of which the population of Świdnik is 40,037, that of Piaski is 2,626, and the rural population is 29,627.
