Sybren began his career as a teacher in the Dutch town of Zwolle

. In 1946 he published his first collection of poetry, ‘Genesis’, under his own name. In 1949 he adopted the pseudonym Sybren Polet and began writing for the literary magazine Podium, for which he later became editor (1952–1965).

He published his first novel, ‘Breekwater’ (Breakwater) in 1961.

His writing has a strong experimental/renewing theme, breaking through the barriers between genres and conventions of structure and chronology.

Polet also writes plays and children's books, and has compiled/edited omnibus editions of poetry and science fiction.
