The Sydney University Lions is the team fielded by the Sydney University American Football Club in the Division One competition of Gridiron NSW
. The Sydney University Lions were one of the foundation teams of Gridiron NSW, playing its first game on 29 April 1984. The club was founded as the "Stormtroopers" before changing to the "Lions" in 1985, becoming the first University of Sydney
club to adopt the "Lions" mascot. The Sydney University Lions is the only club to have competed in every season of Gridiron NSW.
The Lions have established an enviable winning tradition, making it through to 21 Championship games in 27 years of competition and winning twelve state titles - the most by any club - including the last eight in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The all-time win-loss-draw percentage of the Lions is 82.2% (249-52-5), which places its record above the best NFL team (the Miami Dolphins at 57.7%), the best NCAA Division 1A college team (Michigan at 74.0%), the best NCAA college team (Yale at 76.3%) and the best team at any level in the United States (Valdosta High School, Georgia, at 80.8%).
The Club's junior team, the Cubs, was also a foundation team of the Gridiron NSW Junior Competition started in 1994 and has built its own winning tradition. The Cubs have won 6 state championships in 15 years of competition, the most of any team, including the last in 2009.
The Lions are proud members of the oldest and largest sporting organization in Australia
, Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness, and have been honoured as the University's Sporting Club of the Year in 1985, 1991 and 2006.
The club also secured Gold Medals in 1999 and 2000 for the University at the Eastern Australian University Games
, the only years Gridiron has been contested.
The team is open to both students and non students, regardless of experience levels.
