Symptoms of Humanity
Encyclopedia
Symptoms of Humanity is the fourth album from East Los Angeles, California
hardcore punk
band, Union 13
.
It was released in November 2003 on Disaster Records and follows the 2000 album, Youth, Betrayal and the Awakening
.
After recording three successful albums for the Epitaph Records
label, the band encountered line-up problems – which had actually started on Youth, Betrayal and the Awakening
where José Mercado had to carry out lead and rhythm guitar duties as well as bass – and this time lost vocalist Edward Escoto.
The focal point of this album remains squarely on Jose Mercado's word-packed lyrics and his blistering vocals. Bassist Rudy Ramos and drummer Louie Villareal provide overdrive rhythm backup. Though the band is often described as "Latino Hardcore," their sound is more reminiscent of Black Flag, Fear, and Bad Religion. Mercado delivers his lyrics in a fusillade that often obscures both their bilingualism (three of the album's sixteen tracks are in Spanish), and the words themselves.
It took the band three years for their follow-up to be released, although they had started recording material straight away, and bassist Rudy Ramos was called up to swell the ranks. José Mercado and drummer, Louie Villareal, assumed vocal spots.
In spite of these problems, the band were still able to carry out high profile tours in the United States.
