Out of 1,236 households 31.4% had children under the age of 18, 46.1% were married couples
living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% were non-families. Of all households, 30.1% were made up of individuals and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males.

The population of Syracuse increases drastically every summer from about Memorial Day in May until approximately Labor Day in September. Citizens of Syracuse refer to these tourists as "Lakers."
