Talks given at TEDMED combine “the nexus of health, information and technology” with “compelling personal stories” and “a glimpse into the future of healthcare.”

The intent of the conference has been described as “a gathering of geniuses” that brings together “some of the most innovative, thoughtful pioneers of healthcare technology, media, and entertainment into one big four-day ‘dinner party’ to learn from one another and mix people up from different disciplines and industries to solve big problems in healthcare.”

TEDMED talks are free to view online at www.TEDMED.com and www.TED.com, as well as CNN.com.

History

TEDMED was originally founded in 1998 by TED’s founder Richard Saul Wurman

and co-created & relaunched by entrepreneur Marc Hodosh in 2009.

In 2001 the Sapling Foundation, run by entrepreneur Chris Anderson, acquired TED. Wurman however, retained the rights to TEDMED, although no TEDMED conferences took place from 2005 through 2008.

In 2008 Wurman sold TEDMED to Marc Hodosh while continuing to act as an adviser and co-host for two years. The first event under Hodosh’s ownership was held in San Diego in October, 2009. In January 2010, TED.com began including videos of TEDMED talks on the TED website.

The second Hodosh-owned edition of TEDMED took place in October, 2010. It drew a capacity audience of 600 attendees and sold out for a second year with a lengthy waiting list. Tickets cost $4,000 to attend.

In April 2011, entrepreneur Jay Walker and a group of executives and investors purchased TEDMED from Hodosh, who remains involved as partner and host.

The next edition of TEDMED will take place Oct. 25-28 at the Hotel Del Coronado.

Format and Program

TEDMED utilizes the original TED format in several respects. The conference runs 3.5 days. The program features approximately 50 speakers who speak anywhere from 3 minutes to 18 minutes each. Speakers generally don’t use notes, podiums or PowerPoint graphics. There are no breakout sessions; all attendees remain together and experience the same presentations for the duration of the event. All TEDMED talks are video-recorded; the videos are later posted online at TED.com, TEDMED.com and CNN.com for free online viewing.

Speakers represent a variety of fields including medicine, science, business, technology, media, the arts, government and education. Topics at past conferences have included genomics; research on engineering life to create cures and regenerative medicine; the need to collect information about a patient’s environment; the personalization of health care; the quest to slow aging; medical applications for nanotechnology; the future of mobile medical apps and electronic medical records; bionic rehabilitation for injuries; and technologies to make it more practical for the elderly to extend their years at home. Artists, magicians, and comedians also take the stage at times for musical interludes, medically related physical demonstrations or other types of performances.

Speakers

Many TEDMED speakers are famous in the scientific and medical world as well as some also being famous in the media. Speakers are not paid but attend in order to share their progress and ideas with an important audience and to network with other speakers and the audience.
