TIMIT was designed to further acoustic-phonetic knowledge and automatic speech recognition systems. It was commissioned by DARPA and worked on by many sites, including Texas Instruments

(MIT), hence the corpus' name. There is also a telephone bandwidth version called NTIMIT (Network TIMIT).
