games, the player plays the notes of a chosen song's drum part as they are displayed on the screen. The taiko drums can be played using the touch screen or the buttons.
Like the PlayStation Portable versions, Taiko no Tatsujin DS Touch de Dokodon has the ability to engage in 4 player wireless multiplayer. Players can also dress up and add decoration to anthropomporphic taiko character Don.

Occasionally, challenges will be issued to the player. If the player succeeds in completing the challenge, additional decorating items will be unlocked.
Also, in normal mode, player may choose a few other modes and difficulties to enhance gameplay, the modes are accessible via the options menu in song selection screen, as well as the difficulty
The modes are as follow:
1. Auto (オート)
Lets the computer play, mainly to get the song's tempo and music before playing for the real deal. The computer features a perfect full combo, but you won't get any points, represented as a mecha taiko.
2. Baisoku (ばいそく)
Increases the song's speed by around 50%, perfect to speed up slow songs with which you're not accustomed to (usually this happens after playing oni mode for too long), represented as a tiger.
3. Sanbai (さんばい)
Doubles the song's speed, becomes a bit fast, represented as a smiling tiger.
4. Yonbai (よんばい) (unlockable)
Increases the song's speed by around 150%, this presents challenge to any song, and is extremely fast. Represented as a laughing tiger. Unlocked after clearing 30 songs on the hard difficulty.
5. Doron (ドロン)(unlockable)
Removes the notes, leaving only katakana kuchi shoga words as cues, represented as a shuriken
. Unlocked after clearing 30 songs on the normal difficulty.
6. Kanpeki (かんぺき) (unlockable)
Perfect challenge mode, automatically cuts the song when you miss, causing a failure, needing to get a full combo to finish, represented as a king taiko. Unlocked after clearing 30 songs on the Oni level.
7. Abekobe (あべこべ) (unlockable)
Reverse mode, changes don (red notes) to kat (blue notes), while kat changes to don, represented as a purple taiko. Unlocked after clearing 30 songs on the easy level.

Difficulty
Taiko no Tatsujin DS features four level of difficulty. The song and tempo remains the same. However, the number of notes and their variation (the distance between notes, what kind of notes used) differs between the difficulties. Also, there is a general difficulty indicator for each song, represented by stars beside the song's name.
