Tall Cool One is the fourth novel in the "A-List" series by Zoey Dean
. It was released in 2005 by Little, Brown.
At the beginning of the novel, Anna is at the beach with Danny, the producer she met whilst interning for Clark Sheppard on Hermosa Beach, learning to surf but just can't seem to get it. Their relationship from the previous book, Blonde Ambition
, doesn't seem to go more than beyond friends even though they shared a few steamy kisses in the third book. Whilst sitting on the beach Danny spots a gorgeous red-head and waves to her. Anna notices and wonders why. Danny tells her that he met her at a party and they had a one night stand. This leads on to Danny and Anna having a conversation about one night stands and Danny saying that Anna wouldn't have one. Anna says that she would and that she doesn't think casual sex is bad even though she has only had sex once with Ben who has returned to Princeton. Her relationship with him is not certain between both of them but Anna thinks that them two have broken up.
Once Anna returns home she finds her mother and father on the couch in her father's house in Los Angeles having a drink. She finds this shocking because her parents had a divorce and couldn't stand each other. Her father explains that her sister Susan is coming out of rehab and that her doctor there suggested that they meet her there as a whole family. Anna doesn't agree with this since she knows that Susan can't stand either one of her parents but doesn't say it out loud. When they get to the airport Susan is nowhere to be seen and they all are worried. They search the airport but finally give up and go back home. A few minutes after they arrive home Anna receives a phone call from Susan saying that she took another flight from when she landed at LAX since she knew their parents would be there and she couldn't deal with it. Anna is okay with what Susan has done but her mother disapproves.
Anna had enough of the drama of her sister and parents so decides to take a nap upstairs in her room. Unable to sleep and having her phone ring a few times causes Anna to check her messages to find one from Ben calling from Princeton. He says that he thinks that him coming back to school was a good idea and that he still thinks about her. Anna is confused after this and tries and fails to figure out what her and Ben are.
Sam on the other hand is having her own family problems with her new stepmother, Poppy, and soon to be sister, Ruby Hummingbird. Also one of Sam's best friends Dee Young has become friends with Poppy over spiritual classes and becomes closer to her and less to Sam. Dee moves in for a short time because her parents are somewhere else and helps with the baby preparations.
Cammie and Adam's relationship grows, but they have not had sex yet and Cammie finds that strange. She tries to seduce him on the beach of a Hermosa Beach party but all doesn't go well when Adam refuses and Cammie thinks he is a virgin but finds it sweet. Throughout the book whenever they are about to something stops them but they are very close and people find this hard to believe because of Cammie's reputation as a vixen.
Anna sees her father and mother again and quite close since their divorce. She finds this uncomfortable and asks her father once her mother leaves what was happening between them and if they were getting back together. Her father gives her a cryptic answer which does Anna no good. Thinking of relationships Anna calls Ben hoping to get voice mail but he picks up and she freezes. She hangs up after saying nothing to him. She remembers her father asking her whether she wanted to go to Las Casita's in Mexico to help him see if he should invest in the place. She decides to go.
Sam has had enough of Dee and Poppy and everything to do with her family and the baby. Her friends are no help to her and so she goes off to Mexico to meet Anna there since she knows that she is staying there for some time. She doesn't even care about the baby shower she was supposed to attend and then on Jay Leno's show with her father later on.
Before Sam arrives at Las Casitas, Anna had been flirting with the surfing instructor, Kai, and almost has a one night stand with him remembering her conversation with Danny on the beach and her being not able to do it. She tries to prove him wrong but in the end doesn't have sex with Kai because of her over thinking things.
Once Sam arrives though things get fun. They go all around Las Casita's and a street party where afterwards they to the beach and go skinny dipping where a man spots them. In the morning they meet him. His name is Eduardo and he places an interest in Sam. Eduardo is the son of a very wealthy and classy Peruvian politician and likes Sam for her and not her name. Sam does not believe him despite his attempts. She eventually agrees to brunch where she sees his honesty. Later they make plans for dinner since he flies back to Paris the next day. But before that Anna and Sam go shopping in La Trinidad and get drunk on some intense homemade mescal and the worm that goes in it. They get lost in the desert where they then find out that they had not got their jewellery, cell phones or watches. A storm approaches and they find shelter at a very big house. Back at Las Casitas, Eduardo and Kai are meant to meet Anna and Sam but they are both no shows since they are stuck in the desert. Eduardo learns to find that they both did not return to the Las Casitas bus and is very angry and demands to speak with the girls' families.
Jackson Sharpe is not happy that his daughter has gone missing and that they are supposed to appear on Leno that night. He gets the call from Eduardo from Las Casita's and cancels going on Leno and gets Kiki to get his pilot to take him to Mexico.
In the morning Anna and Sam find themselves lying in the bed of the house they found and are discovered by guards that work for the person who owns the place. They are saved by Jackson who came by helicopter for them and return to Beverly Hills. While packing their things, Sam sees Eduardo at her casita but he seems angry and annoyed.
On the way back Anna realises that she did not work out anything while she was in Mexico even though that had been her plan. She was also upset when she got back to the airport that her father had not come to Mexico to save them even though Sam's had.
Back in Beverly Hills, Sam has a party with her friends and Eduardo shows up saying that he was an ass and wants to go out with her. Sam is shocked that he was even in Beverly Hills since he was meant to be on a plane to Paris but he explains that he went to LAX where he would change planes but didn't and the two end up going out.
