) and a man named Pasko. He believes himself to be the last living member of the Orosini. He later meets Caleb and Magnus, sons of Pug and Miranda. He pledges a life-debt to Robert and enters training to see if he is fit to join the Conclave of Shadows.

When first arriving on Sorcerer's Isle with Magnus, he is attacked by three Death Dancers, conjurations of evil necromancy, created out of willingly sacrificed souls. He manages to fight them off, but is again mortally wounded, and is once again saved by the Conclave. He then pledges allegiance to their band, as their goals are aligned for the moment, Talon for revenge against the Duke of Olasko for the destruction of his people, and the Conclave against a necromancer, Leso Varen, once called Sidi, currently a member of the Duke's court, one of their most dangerous enemies.

After training in swordcraft, horseriding, painting, music and women, he is set to become a young noble and his identity is to be Talwin Hawkins, Squire of Morgan River and Bellcastle and Baronet of Silverlake, with the aim of winning the championship for greatest swordsman of the world, in Roldem at the Masters Court. He succeeds in winning the tournament, in the process killing one opponent in self-defense who turns out to be a Keshian assassin sent to kill him, and another deliberately in revenge, a man called Lieutenant Campaneal who had been part of the raid on his village. After winning the tournament, he sets out to take revenge on the mercenary captain Raven, who had led the attack on his village. He leads a mercenary group to defend the Orodoni, a tribe related to his own, and the current target of Raven's band, saving the village. He then chases down and kills Raven, leaving only the Duke Kaspar and Captain Quint Havrevulen to complete his vengeance quest.

After Tal has completed several dangerous tasks, Kaspar betrays Tal by using him as a pawn in an assassination attempt on Duke Varian of Roldem, allowing him to be captured.

Instead of killing Tal, Varian returns him to Olasko in shame, and for his failure, Kaspar sentences him to life on the island 'Fortess of Despair'. His right hand is cut off, and though his outlook is bleak, he manages to gain certain privileges when the prison's cook dies, and his training as a noble allow him to take over. He uses his position to build allegiances among the prisoners and organize an escape, which he finally achieves after three years, with Captain Quint as a sudden and unexpected ally.

Tal's plan is to sack Opardum, using secret tunnels he discovered during his time there, with the help of the survivors from the prison, hired mercenaries, and armies from surround nations who oppose Kaspar's ambitions. His plan works to perfection, but instead of following through on his intentions to kill the Duke, he pardons him at Pug's urging, and the Conclave banishes Kaspar to Novindus
