 (Chiang Mai), which had been under Burmese rule since 1558, successfully revolted in 1725. Taninganway sent an army to recapture the breakaway region but it was driven out. In the northwest, the Manipuri horsemen began raids into Burmese territory, terrorizing the Burmese between Irrawaddy and Chindwin rivers. Taninganway's Burmese forces sent to meet the raiders were easily bypassed by the much more mobile Manipuri horsemen.

In 1724, U Kala compiled the Maha Yazawingyi (Great Chronicle), the first complete chronicle of Burmese history based on earlier sources.
