Biography

Born on December 15, 1948 in Fortaleza, Tasso Jereissati is the son of Senator Carlos Jereissati, who died in 1963, and Maria de Lourdes Ribeiro Jereissati, also died in 2006. With the death of his father, was instructed by his mother to the activities at the family business, majoring in business administration from Fundacao Getulio Vargas.

In 1973 he married Renata Queiroz, daughter of businessman Edson Queiroz and the next year as director of the state Jereissati Group, opens its first shopping mall in Fortaleza, Shopping Center A. By 1982, Tasso inaugurates Iguatemi Fortaleza was the first major shopping Ceará.
In the late '70s, he joined a group of young entrepreneurs concerned with the institutional crisis that threatened to prolong the authoritarian period. He chaired the Industrial Center of Ceara - CIC, transformed by the time forum for discussions of economic issues, social and political region and country.

In 1986 Tasso was elected governor in historic elections that marked the end of the cycle called "Colonels" in the state.
Tasso Jereissati ruled the state three times between 1987 and 2002. Then he was elected to the Senate, where it has outstanding performance. During this period, due to advances made in social policies contributed to significant improvement of the quality of life, the United Nations released research recognizing that Ceara was the Brazilian who had the biggest growth HDI - the period from 1995 to 2002 . Tasso left his last government with 97% of children aged 7 to 14 years in the school.

In 2002, Tasso Jereissati opted to extend his public experience to the legislature, being elected by the PSDB to a vacancy in the Senate, sitting in the same chair occupied by her late father Carlos Jereissati. In the Senate, Tasso Jereissati has outstanding performance, making what he calls "constructive opposition" to the federal government.

Public career

Governor of Ceara
In 1986, Tasso Jereissati, then 38, accepted the challenge to lead a change project in Ceara, which represented a break with the patronage and assistance. Elected governor by the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB), ended the cycle called "colonels" in the state. In 1994, as the Party of Brazilian Social Democracy (PSDB), was elected governor again in Ceará. Senator

In 2002 Tasso was elected senator of the Republic by the state of Ceara. In the Senate, his first speech was on the directions of the Lula government, announcing that their parliamentary action would be "purposeful opposition." Took command of the debate on violence, creating the Subcommittee on Public Safety, who still presides. Several measures have resulted in her area, including the law that allowed the taking of prisoners for hearings by video conference, among others.
