Richard Taylor "Dick" Nash is an American jazz trombonist most associated with the swing and big band genres. He began playing brass instruments at ten. He became more interested in this after his parents died and he was sent to a boarding school. His first instruments were the trumpet and bugle...

became a famous trombonist. He first played at Club 15 and when drafted was labeled 4F because of his back. In 1944 Ted joined Les Brown's Band of Renown. He was met at Union Station by Butch Stone, the band's baritone saxophonist. Ted was to fill in for John Hays, a friend of Ted, for only two weeks. John was going to play for Hal McIntyre. Les like Ted so much that he kept Ted on and left John go because of John's drinking. John never spoke to Ted again. Ted played with the Band of Renown for 2.5 years.

Ted was known to be adventurous. On one of the band’s tours, they were enroute to Heshey, PA by train. Ted, a train enthusiast, decided to climb onto the roof of the moving train. When the train officials found out that someone had done this they came looking for the man, probably to arrest him or have him taken off the train. Don Kramer, the band’s manager, hid Ted in the men’s room. When the officials couldn’t locate the offender, Don confessed that it was one of the band members. The train police said they should have figured it was a musician. They placed Ted under Don’s custody for the rest of the trip. When travelling by plane (military transport) each man was issued a parachute. The joke was that equipped with a parachute, Ted might jump out of the plane.
In 1947 he left the band when Doris Day left it for Hollywood and began a career of playing for TV and films.

Ted is not to be confused with his nephew, jazz saxophonist Ted Nash, son of Dick Nash.
