The school opened in 1962 as Broom Road School, which was originally a single-sex school, taking over the senior boys of Stanley Road School when it ceased to cater for the full age-range.Under the Building Schools for the Future

There are 4 houses which have been made corresponding to the final letter of each form group's name. AS and BS form groups are a part of Stuart House, AT and BT form groups are a part of Tudor House, AW and BW form groups are a part of Windsor House, and AY and BY form groups are a part of York House.
