The department has been led by Commissioner Reagan Farr since January 2007. Farr first joined the department in 2003 as the Assistant Commissioner for Tax Administration. He became the Deputy Commissioner in 2004. http://www.state.tn.us/revenue/aboutus/aboutcommissioner.htm

In addition to overseeing tax law administration, the department is also responsible for enforcing "the revenue laws fairly and impartially in an effort to encourage voluntary taxpayer compliance." http://www.state.tn.us/revenue/aboutus/aboutrevenue.htm
