Brief history

Thanon Chira Junction was opened on 1 November 1922 as Thanon Chira Station since it was a part of Tha Chang section of Ubon Line (21 km). The station has become a junction in 1934 once the line to Khon Kaen has been completed and opened on 1 April 1933. This is very strategic station since it is very close to both downtown Nakhon Ratchasima as well as the gate of Fort Suranaree (the HQ of 2nd Army Region). Initially, this station was constructed as a wooden station until after WWII when the concrete structure has replaced the dilapidated wooden station. This station also has a container crane to handle container loading.
