The Amazing Race 2
Encyclopedia
The Amazing Race 2 is the second installment of the reality television
show The Amazing Race
. The Amazing Race 2 featured 11 teams of two with a pre-existing relationship in a race around the world. It premiered on March 11, 2002 and ended on May 15, 2002.
Childhood friends Chris Luca and Alex Boylan
won this edition of the race.
The complete season was released on DVD, January 24, 2011, exclusively on Amazon.com via their CreateSpace program.
, Namibia
, Hong Kong
, Australia
and New Zealand
. Also, the race visited South America
and Oceania
for the first time.
The route markers were changed to Yellow and Red from Yellow and White of the last season. Also, the cluebox made its debut. Starting in this season, host Phil Keoghan stood at the pit stop on every leg. He welcomed all arriving teams instead of merely welcoming (and dismissing) the last team to arrive.
Cyndi (of Russell and Cyndi) stated that there was confusion about the vehicle replacement rules in Leg 2, where the racers were given a note stating that if their designated jeep broke down, the racers themselves would have to pay for repairs and wait for it to be fixed. Blake and Paige, however, were provided with a new vehicle when the original jeep they were driving broke down, which allowed them to beat Hope and Norm in a race for second-to-last place to the Pit Stop, allowing Blake and Paige to stay in the race, moving on to eventually become one of the season's final 3 teams, while Hope and Norm were eliminated. Henceforth, from Season 3
onward, the rules have stated that teams would always receive a replacement vehicle if the one they had broke down or became unsafe to drive through no fault of their own, but they also would not be given any time credit for the unfortunate situation.
During Leg 13, the final leg, no Detour clue was shown. As no team is shown onscreen reading the Snow Cat instructions at Trapper's Creek, it is speculated that all teams simply chose the same Detour option here, and the other choice was edited out. At the end of Leg 13, Tara & Wil had the lead but Tara was passed by Chris & Alex in a foot race with less than 40 yards to go. This marked the second closest finish in The Amazing Race history, the first one being the season 2 of the Latin American version
, when Mauricio & Carlos won the first place, with Toño & Lili (2nd place team) just a few yards away from them.
A short video clip from the Detour of Leg 8 was later shown in The Amazing Race All-Stars
. It was shown when Oswald and Danny were performing a task while wearing a dragon's-head costume in Macau, as they recalled similarities between the Detour in Hong Kong and the one they were currently performing in Macau.
s, and childhood friends. Oswald and Danny were selected to race in The Amazing Race All-Stars
where they won 3 legs (Leg Numbers 4, 8, and 10). They found a friendly letter from Blake & Paige during the mail-sorting roadblock on Leg 4. In the 8th leg, they went for the Fast Forward with Uchenna & Joyce when there an Intersection and came in 1st Place. The second Fast Forward was in Leg 10. In the 12th leg, they were "Marked for Elimination" and since they already arrived in last place, they were the 8th team eliminated without being issued the 30 minute penalty which also happened to Dustin & Kandice in The Amazing Race 10
in the 11th leg.
The season featured Heloísa Pinheiro
, the real-life "Girl from Ipanema"
as the woman on the "Beach" Detour option in the first Brazil leg.
Chris got married while Alex participated in a project called "Around the World For Free
", where he travels around the world starting with no money, and relies on the generosity and hospitality of locals to continue on.
Gary was an editor on The Amazing Race 5
.
Blake later founded TOMS Shoes
, a footwear company that donates a pair of shoes to needy children for every pair sold.
There has been some confusion over the spelling of Deidre's name. In the first few eipsodes, including the one they actually raced on, it was spelled both on-screen and in the opening as Deidre. However, starting with the third episode, the opening spells her name Diedre.

- A team placement indicates that the team was eliminated.
- An team placement indicates that the team was the last to arrive at a pit stop in a non-elimination leg of the race.
- A indicates that the team won a Fast Forward clue. If placed next to a leg number, this indicates that the Fast Forward was available for that leg but not used.
- Peggy & Claire left the Pit Start in Foz do Iguaçu over 37 minutes late because they missed their departure time. This did not affect their overall placement in Leg 3.
- ^ Peggy & Claire, Shola & Doyin, and Mary & Peach had each fallen so far behind the other teams in their respective elimination legs that they ended up not completing all the tasks set out for them. Instead, they were instructed to go directly to their respective Pit Stops, where they were each eliminated.
- Gary & Dave initially arrived 2nd, but were penalized 42 minutes for speeding, and consequently they departed in 3rd place for the next leg. Chris & Alex received the same penalty as Gary & Dave, but since they were departing in last place, this did not affect their placement.
- Tara & Wil initially arrived 2nd, but were given a 1 minute credit due to a minor production difficulty that caused them a slight delay. Thus they were tied with Blake & Paige for 1st place as a result and also received the first place prize.
