The Art of Man is a quarterly journal by Firehouse Studio Publications that focuses on the fine art of the male figure, founded in the summer of 2010 by Firehouse Studio Publications, authors of Powerfully Beautiful, an anothology of contemporary artists who focus on the male figure.
The Art of Man includes historical references to classical artists whom have included the male figure like Jean Hippolyte Flandrin
, William Adolphe Bouguereau
,and Jean-Léon Gérôme to put the genre in perspective. Issues also contain interviews with galleries around the world, and 5 artists are interviewed in each journal, relaying their own impetus for including the male figure as a large portion of their portfolios and the struggles they encounter because of the subject matter. The works featured are always classical in their approach and include paintings, drawings and sculpture. There is no photography, digital art cartoons or erotic imagery. The Art of Man seeks to bring balance to a genre of art that overwhelmingly favors the female figure.
This is the first quarterly fine arts magazine of its kind following in the footsteps of The Archive from the Leslie Lohman Foundation
of New York made available to members of that organization. Whereas The Archive will often include erotic and overtly gay imagery, The Art of Man seeks to reach a wider audience without the overt references to gay art per se, though its appeal to a gay audience is understood. This journal hopes to be able to bridge the gap between lovers of figurative fine art and those who understand the appeal of classical images of the male figure.
