This book was first published on December 1997 by Simon Pulse. It is set in 1898 and 1899 and takes place in the fictional town of Shadyside.

Sarah has been betrothed to Thomas Fear, a man that she feels represents the repression that she has been forever trying to escape while Jane views the impending marriage as a happily ever after. Jane marries Thomas as Sarah and Sarah boards the boat as Jane. Jane settles into a new routine with Thomas and falls deeply in love with him. The boat Sarah was on sinks in a storm in the middle of the ocean and Sarah's spirit becomes the evil that torments the cheerleaders in R. L. Stine's Cheerleading saga. Sarah views her death an unjust ending to her life and blames Jane for taking the amazing life that rightfully should have been Sarah's if they hadn't traded. Sarah believes Jane should have died and enters Jane's body as an invading spirit. While possessing Jane, Sarah has the ability to control Jane's thoughts and actions and a number of people in Jane's life begin to die - all attributed to the evil actions of the spirit of Sarah.
Jane becomes ill following Thomas' death and almost dies as a result of the heartbreak as she did truly love him. Once recovered, Jane is out boating with a family friend and the niece and nephew of Thomas who have come under the care of Jane now that Thomas has passed. Jane recognizes a moment of danger by reading Sarah's thoughts and in an effort to save the children, she dives into the lake. Jane inhales underwater, despite the efforts of Sarah to control the body and bring them to the surface. Sarah refuses to drown twice but Jane is able to win and drowns them both.
The book ends with Jane's funeral and Sarah's spirit looking out of Jane's dead eyes. She swears revenge and claims that her spirit may be locked within Jane's body but will eventually be free. Hence the terror on the Cheerleaders in the mentioned saga.
