These events come to a head when Chip gets himself invited to Steven's parents' for their family dinner, while Steven is out on bail. Chip embellishes his friendship with Robin, coaxes Steven to play "porno password", and privately implies he slept with Robin once Steven cracks under the pressure. This provokes Steven into punching Chip, and Chip acts the martyr as he makes his exit. Once at home, Steven receives a call from Rick who had reluctantly agreed to investigate Chip on Steven's behalf. They realize that Chip has been using aliases from sitcom television, and has been fired from the cable company several times.
Chip takes Robin to the cable company's large satellite dish during a rainstorm. Steven tracks the pair down and finds that Chip has taken Robin hostage with a staple gun at the top of the dish's superstructure. Chip reveals emotional baggage from being raised by his television, expressing resentment for his mother and lamenting his failure to be a good friend to Steven. After a dramatic monologue and with a police helicopter shining a search light on him, Chip jumps off the platform. As the much-publicized trial of an accused murderer and former child star (played by director Ben Stiller

) is about to come to a conclusion, Chip lands on the dish's receiver, interrupting cable service across the city just before the verdict is delivered. Chip survives his fall, but injures his back. Chip reconciles with Steven and Robin as paramedics secure him.
Chip gets excited when the paramedic calls him "buddy", and as the credits are about to roll, he flashes the camera a devious smile. This entire last scene is a parody of a similar scene in the 1991 film Ricochet
