The Call of the Wintermoon
Encyclopedia
The Call of the Wintermoon is a song by the black metal
band Immortal
from their album Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism
. The song is notable for its music video
, in which members of the band run amok in a forest and through the site of an ancient ruin, wearing corpse paint (and other articles such as a wizard costume), brandishing various weapons and, among other things, breathing fire.
It was, however, soon afterwards described by the band as a huge mistake as the TV station that they made the video for mocked them in their interview with the band after they aired the video, labeling them Satanic. It was also in this interview that Kolgrim invented the term "holocaust metal" which sparked controversy. The title of the band's next album Pure Holocaust
was in reference to this.
Sections of this video have been turned into animated gif files which are used widely in various circles on the internet when anything grim or frostbitten is mentioned, perhaps as a nod to the influence that the video has had on the public perception of black metal, and of the extreme metal
subgenre as a whole. Although in most instances of such allusion, it is in either a parody or sarcastic setting clearly dictating scenes as "funny" or "strange" as with other segments of the black metal sub genre, which in general are fan created and niche in their spectrum of influence.
In 2004, an Omaha,NE music project called Homesick Abortion made a parody black metal video called "Satan took my Soul" that is heavily influenced by the video. It show members of the band in various masks and make-up running through the woods.
