The Charlemagne Pursuit, was released December 9, 2008 . This is Steve Berry's seventh novel, and is the fourth adventure for former U.S. Justice Department Operative turned Antiquarian book dealer, Cotton Malone.
The story follows Cotton Malone trying to find out the details of his father's death, Forrest Malone, a Navy Officer who died in a submarine in 1971. Also trying to find out that sub's fate are German twins, Cristl Falk and Dorothea Lindauer,whose father was on the same submarine. Also involved is ambitious Admiral Langford Ramsey, who tries to hide his involvement with a second sub sent to find Forest Malone and his crew. Stephanie Nelle, Malone's ex-boss and Edwin Davis (Deputy National Security Advisor
) also become involved, searching for Charlie Smith, a killer hired by Ramsey to eradicate any links to him.
All plots are connected to an ancient Antarctic civilization (known as Civilization One) which taught Charlemagne and his chronicler Einhard advanced technology thought to have been invented by modern humans. This is what the two submarines were searching for.
