The Cherryholmes
Encyclopedia
Cherryholmes was a bluegrass music
group consisting of members of the Cherryholmes family, including father Jere Cherryholmes and wife Sandy Lee and their kids, Cia Leigh, BJ, Skip, and Molly Kate.
After the death of the family's eldest daughter, The Cherryholmes' decided to get away for a weekend in an attempt to get their minds off the tragedy, and went to a bluegrass festival.
On the way home from the weekend-long festival, they agreed to start their own family band. Jere took the lead and assigned the kids an instrument each. With backgrounds in Celtic music, he and Sandy decided to teach the basics of each instrument to the children.
Cherryholmes was the recipient of the International Bluegrass Music Association
Entertainers of the Year award for 2005 and were nominated again in 2007. Other accolades include Grammy nominations in 2006, 2007, and 2008 for Best Bluegrass Album.
Cherryholmes has released seven albums since 2001. The first three albums were released independently; the next four were released on Skaggs Family Records.
On January 12, 2011, Cherryholmes announced via their website that they had decided to disband the group and would be performing their last show together on May 7, 2011 in Galax, VA. Jere and Sandy wrote on their website "we believe it is only right that our young folks be allowed to follow their own dreams and goals for the future. With spouses to consider and differing career aspirations, they deserve the freedom to choose their own paths without the extreme interdependence that exists in a family business."
Molly started a project called "Corporation Insania". You can keep up with her at www.corporationinsania.com and her EP is on iTunes.
In June, B.J. and Skip announced they were starting their own band called "Cherryholmes Brothers". The band consists of B.J., Skip, Gena Britt, Jamie Harper, and Travis Anderson. You can keep up with them on facebook and a website will be coming soon.
