The Community Science College @ Thornhill is a specialist Science college which is situated just outside Dewsbury
, West Yorkshire
on the western side of Kirklees LEA (Huddersfield
). It is within easy access of both the M1
and the M62
. The college serves both the urban and rural areas of Dewsbury and draws from the village of Thornhill, Thornhill Lees and Savile Town. It is a mixed comprehensive with currently 764 pupils on roll. Over the past three years the number on roll has continued to grow. As of the latest Ofsted
inspection report in April 2010, the college is judged as 'Good'.
The Headmaster of the College is Mr Jonathan Mitchell and the Chair of Governors is Mr Brian Hagger. The College's motto is "Achievement for All".
A major building programme, which began in May 2002, is now complete and has seen investment of £4.2 million under the Public Private Partnership Initiative. This work involved a complete upgrade of all college buildings including brand new areas in Design Technology, Creative and Expressive Arts, Humanities and a new Learning Resource Centre. A new Sports Hall And Muga Has Been Built which is open to the pupils at the school 8.30 am-5 pm and open to the public 5 pm to 10 pm.
Every department has its own designated specialist suited teaching area. The college has:
Some students, however, will go on to study English Literature and Statistics once the primary GCSEs are settled.
Students taking each science as a separate subject, will study for three GCSEs, one each for Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Due to the College's Science status, triple science is offered to some students where the Double Award or Science Nationals is offered to others.
During the first three years, the following is offered in the Technology department. Students may choose one of these to continue at GCSE level.
During the first three years, students will be taught French or Urdu. They may continue these at GCSE level in Year 10.
