The Journal is produced both on paper and online. All accepted "in press" articles are first published online, ahead of print, and issues become freely accessible 12 months after publication. The full archive back to 1878 is freely available online. The current editor-in-chief is David J. Paterson.

Through The Journal of Physiology, The Physiological Society funds a number of sponsored symposia - usually during major international research conferences - every year. Talks from these symposia are usually published in a special symposium issue of The Journal.
