The Newspaper, published by non-profit corporation Planet Publications Inc., is the largest independent student-run campus newspaper in Canada with circulation on the University of Toronto
campus. It began publishing in 1978 and was briefly operated as The Independent Weekly. The Newspaper has been financially self-supporting for its entire history and has survived despite competing against many student-fee-supported campus newspapers. The Newspaper is officially recognized by the University of Toronto
under the campus media policy of its Governing Council, a unique policy protecting the rights of independent publishers on the University of Toronto campus.
