Established in 1889 as the Cork County Southern Star, it incorporated The Skibbereen Eagle, a newspaper founded in 1857, which became famous by declaring it was
"keeping an eye on the Czar of Russia" over his expansionist designs on China.
This newspaper was superseded by the Southern Star in 1889. One of its early editors from 1899 was D. D. Sheehan
