Leigh was elected Master
(head) of Balliol College, Oxford
on 12 May 1726, a post he held until his death in 1785.
He was from outside the College and a nephew of the College's Visitor
, yet he did not cause the College to fall into decline. During his time as Master of Balliol, he was also Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University from 1738 until 1741.
