system in the city of Tianjin, China, which was the second city (after Beijing) in China to operate a subway system. Founded in 1984, it now includes 22 stations. The system currently consists of a single northwest-east line. It is a serpentine shaped line and is mostly underground, running from the Liuyuan station in the northwest to the Şhuanglin station in the east.

of China, Tianjin is an important commercial city. After 1950, the number of motor vehicles on the roads increased dramatically, especially trucks. Streets that were normally dominated by trams, started being used by motorcars. Thus the frequency of traffic jams increased, as did pollution and smog. To overcome these problems, the transport authority decided to close the tram

 network.

Tianjin Metro was founded in 1970, April 7, subway project since China stopped defers policy then in place, coupled with financial constraints forced to stop building.
Construction started on July 4, 1970; the first part with 3.6 km of track and 4 stations was completed by February 1976. The second part which contained another 1.6 km of track and the Xinanjiao and Erweilu stations was completed by 1980. After construction resumed, the total length was 7.4 km, with 8 stations, and service on the line began on December 28, 1984. The tram network continued operation for two years after the commencement of construction, closing in 1972.

To reduce construction costs, the transport authority decided to use an abandoned canal bed to form part of the system, and did not dig deeply. By using the canal bed, the underground section is only 2–3 meters under the street surface, and is the world's shallowest metro. There were only 1,000 full-time construction workers at that time; the others were volunteers from factories, schools and institutions all over the city. The use of a majority of volunteer workers is unique in world subway construction. The average number of volunteer workers exceeded 2,000 a day. Construction was delayed in 1976 when an earthquake

hit the city, and was resumed and finished between 1979 and 1984.

At the end of 1990s, it was observed that Tianjin metro was quite out of date. Where underground railway is the quickest means of transportation in any city, Tianjin was an exception. Train station entrances were difficult to locate; the atmosphere of the stations was very dark, with outdated wooden chairs on the platforms. Train headways were intolerable, and within the dilapidated trains themselves, the seat covers had often been torn off. Taking into consideration more modern, cleaner systems in Asia, a massive reconstruction, modernization and expansion plan was laid out in 2000. In preparation, the system was closed on September 1, 2001, with renovation fully starting on November 21. After purchasing new rolling stock, adding half-height platform screen doors

and extending the line up to Shuanglin, the system re-opened on December 6, 2006 after trial testing that started on June 12 of that year.

There were older, box-type metro cars, built by Japanese Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited until the system was closed for reconstruction. Line 1

Some stations have island platforms & most have side platforms. All elevated stations are entirely covered by mixture of transparent & opaque corrugated sheets. All stations have half height platform screen door. Existing lines established Xinhua Road Station were permanently closed and became a permanent closure of the continent's first subway stations. The official statement for the station and therefore Xiaobailou Only Too Close had been closed. Also pointed out that this stand off is likely because the municipal government of Tianjin Municipal Committee building materials connected underground pass, to transform the inconvenience.
