has dated his reign to 876 – 871 BC, while Thiele
offers the dates 885 – 880 BC.
Following the death of Zimri
, a considerable number of the people chose Tibni as monarch, and he contended for the throne against Omri
over the next few years (1 Kings
16:21, 22), only to be defeated. Tibni's death is recorded but not explained.
Tibni appears to have been of Jerahmeel
ite origin as his rival Omri.
It was suggested that Tibni is a nickname meaning "man of straw".
