Murtagh is a left-handed batsman and a right-arm fast-medium bowler. He first shone in the 2000 Under-19s World Cup. Though he is first and foremost a seam bowler, Murtagh has progressed with his batting, and has stepped in on many occasions to rescue Surrey

After injuries to many of the Surrey bowlers in 2005, he has found himself having to lead the attack on several occasions. Murtagh took figures of 6/24 versus Middlesex in the 2005 Twenty20 Cup, which at the time were the best bowling figures in the short form games.
He has taken 76 wickets (average 37.07; best bowling 6/86) in 38 first-class matches, 80 wickets in 66 List A matches (average 32.72; best bowling 4/14) and 37 wickets (average 22.91; best bowling 6/24) in 29 Twenty20 matches. He has also taken 16 wickets (average 16.31; best bowling 4/29) in three Youth Tests and 12 wickets (average 19.33, best bowling 4/26) in 7 List A Internationals for the England Under-19 XI.
He joined Middlesex
in 2007, where he has enjoyed great success.
