History

The Port Fairy railway line was opened in 1887, followed by a branch from Camperdown to Timboon that opened in 1892 and closed in 1986. The local railway station is now closed. The Post Office in the township opened on 7 March 1887. Two earlier offices named Timboon were opened in the area, one open from 1849 to 1852, the second, opening in 1853, was renamed Camperdown in 1854.

Today

Children from the district attend Timboon P-12 School, previously known as Timboon Consolidated School.

Timboon Fine Ice-Cream is popular around tourist areas in the south west, such as Port Campbell and Peterborough. It is hand made near the town itself at a local factory. Timboon Farmhouse Cheese, a locally established family business was closed early in 2009, following its acquisition by a multi-national corporation. It has recently re-opened and is developing a new range of specialist cheese products.

Although the railway station has been closed for many years, it was renovated and reopened in mid-2008 as the town's only restaurant besides the local pub, putting the station into use for the first time since being used as a Guide

On weekends many school children play sport. Some play hockey, but most play in the Warrnambool Football Netball League for the Timboon Demons, which was created when Heytesbury Demons and Timboon Saints merged together after the folding of the Heytesbury-Mount Noorat league in late 2001. This action damaged the club for about a year as two teams that were once rivals and fought for the cup each season were forced to play side by side. By 2003 this had settled and the locals were reunited again by the sport.

Golfers play at the course of the Timboon Golf Club on Egan Street.
