Tollesby, is a residential area within the Acklam ward situated in the town of Middlesbrough
in the borough of Middlesbrough
and the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire

. The local school is Newham Bridge Primary school. There are also 3 secondary schools; King's Manor Specialist Sports College, Hall Garth Performing Arts College & St. Davids Roman Catholic Technology College. Although they are in close proximity to Tollesby they are considered to be Acklam/Acklam Hall area as they are directly opposite the old Hustler Mansion of Acklam Hall
, which itself is now a campus of Middlesbrough College
. It has 1 public House, The Endeavour (named after Captain Cook's famous vessel) situated on Newbridge court. The future of this pub is uncertain as the land on which the surrounding shops and flats occupy has been sold and is earmarked for demolition. It is uncertain what the land will then be used for.
Regarding the uncertainty, Liberal Democrat representative Chris Foote-Wood says in his latest pamphlet 'Focus on Acklam': "It stands out like a sore thumb - the parade of empty shops beside Newbridge Court, between Rievaulx Drive and Cawood Drive, known as Tollesby Shops. These shops seem to have been kept deliberately empty by the owners by the simple expedient of refusing to extend the leases when they come up for renewal. My understanding is that the Tollesby Garage adjacent to the shops remains in business only because it has a longer lease. It appears that the owners are waiting for the garage lease to end so that they can redevlop the whole block, probably for flats.
Having been a planning committee member for many years, I am familiar with plans and planning regulations. Studying the Local Development Framework in detail, the whole block, including the shops, garage and the Endeavour Pub, is classed as a 'Neighbourhood Centre", which comes under Policy Reg30 for this type of development...
...Obvious objections to flats being built on this site are 1) The area is already fully residential and it is more amenities, not more houses or flats, that are needed; 2) the development would put more traffic onto local roads which are regularly crossed by children going to and from school; 3) even if car parking is provided within the development, it would inevitably mean more cars parked along the adjoining streets; 4)the loss of local shopping has been detrimental to the amenities of local residents and negates the whole purpose of the Local Developmental Framework in designating Neighbourhood Centres. Arguments in favour would be the need for this type of accommodation and the need to reverse the decline in Middlesbrough's population....
