Thomas Eldon Hayhurst is a former city council member from Fort Wayne, Indiana
. He unsuccessfully sought Indiana's 3rd District Congressional seat as the Democratic nominee in 2006 and 2010.
A Vietnam-era veteran, Dr. Tom Hayhurst served as a Capt. Major in the United States Air Force. From 1969-1971, he served as General Medical Officer on active duty at various military installations across the United States.
Dr. Hayhurst has served as a clinical Assistant Prof. of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine and is a member of the Boards of Arts United, Arthritis Foundation, Indiana High Speed Rail Assoc., and Invent Tomorrow. He is also a founding member of Veterans for Better Health Care, the Wolf Lake Free Health Clinic, the pulmonary clinic at Matthew 25 Free Health and Dental Clinic in Fort Wayne and the Northeast Indiana Passenger Rail Association.
A recipient of numerous awards and recognition, Dr. Hayhurst was awarded the "Americanism Award for Outstanding Service and Leadership" by the Allen County (IN) Council of Veterans in both 2005 and 2006 as well as the Indiana Public Health Assoc. Local Elected Official Award in 1999.

Background
Dr. Tom Hayhurst was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on July 5, 1942. He grew up in Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and Chicago, Illinois. He is married to Judy Hayhurst. He and his wife have two grown daughters, Anne and Susan. The Hayhursts have been members of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Wayne since 1972.Education and military service
Hayhurst graduated from Indiana University at Bloomington in 1964. He graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine at Indianapolis in 1967 with an MD. From 1974-2005 Dr. Hayhurst practiced medicine as Pulmonary-Critical Care specialist at Indiana Medical Associates in Fort Wayne.
