About the Toronto Independent Music Awards:

Toronto Independent Music Awards, otherwise known as the TIMAs, is an independent awards ceremony, showcase series and seminar founded in 2004 by Daniela Oliva. The concept evolved out of a desire to support independent musicians and bring together the music community. The TIMAs serve as a platform to award and acknowledge up-and-coming independent artists across the province of Ontario, Canada and throughout the world. The ultimate aim is to create an infrastructure to give independent artists a hand by providing industry sponsored prizes and community support. Each year, the TIMAs give away $60,000 in custom prize packages to winners in over 22 categories across all genres. Award winners have gone on to sign with major and independent labels, secure major motion picture publishing deals, and win Junos

About the Founder:

Daniela Oliva has been heavily involved with the Toronto, Ontario, Canada and global independent music scene since her early teens. At a very young age, she was fascinated by punk rock/lo-fi noise and joined guerrilla music marketing efforts around the globe. With her bedroom as base camp, Daniela promoted material in Toronto for labels SUB POP Records, Kill Rock Stars, Sudden Death Records, Fearless Records, Fat Wreck Chords and many, many more.

In 2005, she invested in and co-founded Drugs Sex Rock ‘n’ Roll (DSRNR) booking Tokyo Police Club (Saddle Creek / Memphis Industries) for one of their first gigs, planning parties with MSTRKRFT (Last Gang Records / PAIS Recordings / Dim Mak Records), and promoting for The Marble Index (Maple Music) during Canadian Music Week.

Inspired at age 17 by attending the American Music Awards in Los Angeles, California, Daniela thought it would be cool to adapt the award show model to an independent music audience - and the Toronto Independent Music Awards (TIMAs) was born.

Now on its eighth season and sixth award show, the TIMAs is a highly anticipated event awarding 20+ music genre categories with over $60,000 in industry-sponsored prizes. Many notable acts have been involved with the TIMAs, including: Alannah Myles (Recording Artist), Gord Lewis (Recording Artist, Teenage Head), The Cliks (Warner Music /Tommy Boy Records), The Joys (eOne Entertainment, Certified Gold Recording Artists), The Essentials (Certified Gold Recording Artists), JD ERA (Black Market Music Group / Universal), up-and-comers Darrell London, The Ruby Spirit, Juno award winners The Good Lovelies, Rich Kidd, Juno nominees: God Made Me Funky, JAFFA ROAD, DALA and many, many more. The TIMAs also showcase hundreds of Ontario independent bands throughout the year through the Home and Native Sound Series.

In 2008, Daniela graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto (University College), and then moved to Southern California to attend law school. Now in her third year of law school, Daniela has already worked as a legal intern for Live Nation at the Live Nation headquarters in Beverly Hills, California. Daniela continues to produce the TIMAs and mentor young bands while pursuing a career in entertainment law.
