Torsion (gastropod)
Overview
Torsion is an anatomical event which takes place during the very early part of the life of snail
s and slug
s of all kinds. In other words, torsion is a gastropod synapomorphy
which occurs in all gastropods during larva
l development. Torsion is the rotation of the visceral mass
, mantle
and shell
180˚ with respect to the head and foot of the gastropod. This brings the mantle cavity and anus to an anterior position above the head.
In some groups of gastropods (Opisthobranchia
) there is a degree of secondary detorsion or rotation towards the original position, this may be only partial detorsion or full detorsion.
The torsion or twisting of the visceral mass of larval gastropods is not the same thing as the spiral coiling of the shell
of many shelled gastropods.
There are two different developmental stages which cause torsion.
Snail
Snail is a common name applied to most of the members of the molluscan class Gastropoda that have coiled shells in the adult stage. When the word is used in its most general sense, it includes sea snails, land snails and freshwater snails. The word snail without any qualifier is however more often...

Slug
Slug is a common name that is normally applied to any gastropod mollusc that lacks a shell, has a very reduced shell, or has a small internal shell...

Synapomorphy
In cladistics, a synapomorphy or synapomorphic character is a trait that is shared by two or more taxa and their most recent common ancestor, whose ancestor in turn does not possess the trait. A synapomorphy is thus an apomorphy visible in multiple taxa, where the trait in question originates in...

Larva
A larva is a distinct juvenile form many animals undergo before metamorphosis into adults. Animals with indirect development such as insects, amphibians, or cnidarians typically have a larval phase of their life cycle...

In anatomy, a viscus is an internal organ, and viscera is the plural form. The viscera, when removed from a butchered animal, are known collectively as offal...

Mantle (mollusc)
The mantle is a significant part of the anatomy of molluscs: it is the dorsal body wall which covers the visceral mass and usually protrudes in the form of flaps well beyond the visceral mass itself. In many, but by no means all, species of molluscs, the epidermis of the mantle secretes...

Gastropod shell
The gastropod shell is a shell which is part of the body of a gastropod or snail, one kind of mollusc. The gastropod shell is an external skeleton or exoskeleton, which serves not only for muscle attachment, but also for protection from predators and from mechanical damage...
