Total Wine is the expansion of the now defunct Pennsylvania chain of the alcohol retailer known as "Beer World". The business originated with Case Beer Outlet in Hanover, Pennsylvania, which was opened by Thomas Trone Sr., the father of owners David and Robert Trone.

In 1998, Total Wine & More purchased five Total Beverage stores from the Dart Group. Following the purchase, Total Wine grew slowly until 2002, when other executives were brought in from major retailers like BJ'sBJ's Wholesale Club
