n tourist industry is less well developed than the tourist industry in some African countries. This is partly a result of past government policies. The Tanzanian state had a major shareholding in the tourist industry, and foreign companies were reluctant to invest in the country. In 1990, the government began to liberalize the tourist sector, which revitalised the tourist industry. The government created the Tanzanian Tourist Board in 1992. The tourist industry currently supports 27,000 jobs and generates 25% of Tanzania's foreign exchange. The country had more than 330,000 visitors in the mid 1990s.
