Tyler Rix

Tyler Pearce Rix, saxophone player and footballer, was born in Watford, 2 January 1993.

History – Music

Tyler Rix began playing the saxophone at the age of 9 in primary school lessons and had progressed to grade 5 with distinction within 18 months. He passed grade 8 at the age of thirteen. He attended Frith Manor Primary School in Woodside Park , North West London, and currently attends Dame Alice Owen's School in Herts.

He was accepted to the Junior Department of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in Barbican London in 2003 to study classical and jazz saxophone on Saturdays. In July 2008 Tyler won Junior Guildhall's most prestigious annual prize, The Lutine Prize. In 2007, 2008 and 2009 Tyler was awarded the sax.co.uk Scholarship by Junior Guildhall.

Tyler was mentioned in Gramophone in the Reviews Editor's Highlights of the Year 2007 for a performance given at Queen Elizabeth Hall.

The Tyler Rix quartet performed at the Vortex in the London Jazz Festival 22 November 2008. Because of the young age of Tyler Rix his management company had to apply for a Chaperone Licence to accompany him.

Since 2007 Tyler has made solo appearances at The Barbican, St Martins-in-the Fields with the Brandenburg Sinfonia, St John's Smith Square with the Junior Guildhall Symphony Orchestra, Wales Millennium Centre, The Arts Depot Finchley with St Michael's School, The Mermaid Theatre for BBC Radio 2's Friday Night Is Music Night with the BBC Concert Orchestra; he has appeared on Blue Peter, London Tonight, BBC News, Classic FM, Radio 5 Live, and regional radio stations. He has played for Music First, The Bobby Moore Fund and Camden Calling charity events.

Tyler plays the alto and soprano saxophones.

History – Football

Tyler started playing football at Borehamwood Mini Soccer in 1997 aged 4.

In January 2001, at the age of 8, Tyler signed for West Ham United Academy

. The following year, Tyler appeared on the front cover of the book, Junior Soccer: A Complete Coaching Guide for the Young Player a coaching guide produced in association with West Ham. Tyler also made several appearances throughout the book.

In 2003 Tyler was selected to captain the Barnet Borough team until he took up his Saturday place with Junior Guildhall.

In 2004 Tyler captained West Ham Juniors in the semi-finals of the Ascension International Tournament in Belgium.

In April 2007 Tyler played for Dame Alice Owen’s school and won the English Schools FA National Cup.

In 2006 Tyler was selected by his District and in 2007 selected by his County, joining the County team for a tournament in Valencia in 2009.

approached him to join the UCJ label. In 2009 he signed to Universal Classics and Jazz and at the age of 16 became one of their youngest acts. His first recording, Ascent, is a collection of old and new classical pieces was released in January 2009. Released initially as an EP it was released as a full length recording in February 2009.
