Able was laid down on 23 March 1989 at McDermott Shipyard in Morgan City, Louisiana
. Launched on 16 February 1991, she was delivered to the Navy on 22 July 1992, assigned to the Military Sealift Command (MSC), and placed in service as USNS Able (T-AGOS-20). The ship has a SWATH design.
Able was taken out of service in August 2004 and laid up in the Reserve Fleet at NAVSEA Inactive Ships On-site Maintenance Office, in Philadelphia, PA. Able was reactivated in 2008 and was converted in Charleston, South Carolina
for SURTASS low frequency active-array (LFA) capabilities. Able is attached to the United States Pacific Fleet
and provides support to the United States Seventh Fleet
