Maldives made history with the implementation of the world’s first hybrid AC Coupled Renewable Energy Micro Grid in Uligan that will help reduce the dependence on fossil fuel and toxic emissions, which in turn will contribute to reduce the effects of global warming. In 2008 MTDC ( the Maldivian Public company ) started to build a 4 star 50 rooms and 100 beds resort in Uligamu. But recently project was stopped. A development budget of USD 16 million was estimated for Uligamu Development Project; consisting of USD 6 million equity finance and USD 10 million debt finance. As of today, USD 6.5 million worth of investment had been made towards property development. However, further development is pending on availibilty of loan finance, which has not materilized as expected due to the daunting global economic crisis. Therefore many employees had been cut off from the project and among these employees are almost Uligamu people.
