. The population was 684 at the 2000 census. When first settled, in 1831, Ulysses was named Lewisville, after an early settler, Orange Lewis. Orange Lewis was a prominent farmer
who later became Justice of the Peace
, and then county treasurer
. However, the post office
and newspaper were both named Ulysses, and eventually, in 1968, the town was officially re-named Ulysses.

There were 268 households out of which 31.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were married couples
living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 26.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.07.
In the borough the population was spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 87.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.0 males.
