In 1974 Turkey
unilaterally invaded Cyprus and was able to occupy ~38% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus. This action partitioned the island, displaced the Greek-Cypriot population (around 200,000 people) from the north occupied part of the island, and in turn catalysed the displacement of Turkish-Cypriots from the south of Cyprus.
