This involves holding workshops by IT professionals and providing hands on training to students during winter and summer training sessions to work on projects collaboratively with industry peers and faculty. The faculty does a lot of consultancy in collaboration with the industry so as to bring the market experience to its students and the institute. Also students and industry gurus collaborate through seminars/ workshops on the latest technologies.
It is functioning under "the Executive Council" of the Himachal Pradesh
University since year 2000 in the University Campus. The institute admits students from all over the country to the Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology and imparts training to make them competent, motivated Engineers, leaders, thinkers, innovators and scientists. The academic program of UIIT is also approved by the All India Council of Technical education.

Extra-Curricular
Institute organizes various events for the all-round development of the students. Amongst all the biggest event is UTKARSH which is a two day inter-college festival in which colleges from in and around the state are invited to participate in. The fest is conducted by Information Technology Students Association(ITSA) which has a President, Vice President, Finance Secretary and Joint Secretary in the Governing Body. It is the only event of its kind in the University Campus which takes place at three venues simultaneously with a foot fall of 1500 to 2000 students.
