History

The establishment of Universitas Airlangga has a long history. Before Universitas Airlangga was formally established on 9 and October 11, 1847, the proposal to educate young talented Javanese to become health experts was submitted to the Dutch Colonial Government. On January 2, 1849 — through the National Law (Keputusan Pemerintah) No. 22 — NIAS (Nederlandsch Indische Artsen School) was founded as a medical learning center in Surabaya. Since 1913, medical education in Surabaya was held on Jl. Kedungdoro 38, Surabaya. In 1923, NIAS was moved to the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Airlangga now on Jl. Major General Prof. Dr. Moestopo Surabaya.

Dr. Lonkhuizen, the incumbent director of the Department of Health, proposed the establishment of School of Dentistry in Surabaya, which had been pioneered since from July 1928 until 1945. He received the approval from Dr. R.J.F. Van Zaben, the following director of NIAS. Later on, the school was better known as STOVIT (School Tot Opleiding van Indische Tandarsten) which managed to gather 21 students. STOVIT was renamed as Ika Shika Daigaku under the supervision of Dr. Takeda as its first director (1942–1945).

Two years later, the Dutch Colonial Government took over Ika Shika Daigaku and then changed its name to Tandheekunding Institute. In 1948, this school changed its status to Universitier Tandheelkunding Institute (UTI). Under the Republik Indinesia Serikat (RIS), UTI was renamed as LKIG (Institute of Dentistry) for four years, under the leadership of Prof. M. Knap and Prof. M. Soetojo. In 1948, Universitas Airlangga became a branch of the Universits Indonesia (UI) with the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry.

Universitas Airlangga was officially established in 1954 by Government Regulation (Peraturan Pemerintah) No. 57/1954 and was inaugurated by the president of the Republic of Indonesia on November 10, 1954, coinciding with the celebration of the ninth national Heroes' Day

Name and symbols

The name 'Airlangga' is taken from the name of the reigning king of East Java in 1019–1042, Rakar Galu Sri Lokeswara Dharmawangsa Airlangga Anantawikramattungadewa (well-known as Prabu Airlangga). The symbol of Universitas Airlangga is Garuda — a magical bird ridden by Vishnu — that carries an urn containing an eternal water "Amrta". This symbol represents Universitas Airlangga as the source of ever-lasting knowledge.

The colors of the flag of Universitas Airlangga are dominated by yellow and blue; yellow symbolizes greatness and blue symbolizes a deep soul and the warrior. These colors are taken from the veil that covered Vishnu's statue at the founding ceremony of Universitas Airlangga by the first president of the Republic of Indonesia on 10 November 1954.
