The University of Kurdistan - Hawler (UKH) is an educational institution in Erbil
(Kurdish: Hawler) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq
. UKH was the fifth public university that was opened in the Kurdistan Region. It was established in 2006.
The University of Kurdistan- Hewler is an new initiative in the federal region of Kurdistan in Iraq, funded by the [Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)]. The current Vice-Channellor is Professor Sirwan Baban. The medium of instruction and research is English and most of its staff are internationally recognized scholars. The University of Kurdistan - Hewler (UKH) was funded by the former Prime Minister HE Nechirvan Barzani and founded by five well-established lecturers from the UK in 2006. The University's longest-serving academic staff member is Dr. Nigel M. Greaves, who lectures in political theory in the Department of Politics and International Relations.
The prior aim of establishing the UKH was to introduce a British-style university into Iraq in general and the Kurdistan Region particularly, and educating the young generation of Kurdistan with modern programs and teaching facilitiies, so as to contribute to the developments of the Region. It currently offers degrees in Management and Business Sciences, Politics and International Relations, Sociology Sciences, Applied Computing and IT, Natural Resources Science (Petroleum Engineering, Mineral Resources Engineering, Water Resources Engineering). It's first class of graduation was in 2010. By June 2011, it had 224 graduates in both its undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Despite its young age, UKH has become an well-known institution throughout the region. UKH has been regularly visited by local and international leaders, i.e., minister, MPs, civil society managers and leaders, and public figures.
On May 29th, 2011, UKH granted an Honorary Doctorate in Politics and International Relations to Sir John Major, the former British Prime Minister (1991 – 1997) who had been very helpfull with the Kurds during his term in office. In his speech, he described students of UKH as a "rare asset".

Departments
The University of Kurdistan has started its academic activities with five departments in its first draft of academic organisational structure; in addition to the English Department. Its main goal is to develop existing skill of English language of local students, whose major language is Kurdish.List of Departments
