, USA. The intersection of Dudley Street and Columbia Road is the heart of Uphams Corner, and one of Dorchester's main business districts. Uphams Corner is served by several bus lines and the MBTA's Fairmount Communter Rail. Often, Uphams Corner is known as Columbia Square.

There is a very large Cape Verdean immigrant community in Uphams Corner; it is the largest concentration of Cape Verdean residents within Boston city limits. The district has several historical sites, including the Strand Theatre, the Columbia Square Barbonic Hall, and Dorchester North Burying Ground, which is the nation’s second oldest cemetery. Jones Hill and Edward Everett Square are often thought of as part of Uphams Corner, but they are separate areas.

History

Uphams Corner is named after John Upham who kept a dry food market in the square for several years.

Education

The Patrick O'Hearn School, Edward Everett Elementary School, Boston Collegiate Charter School, the Mather School, the John Winthrop School, the William E. Russell School, the Roger Clap School, the John W. McCormack School, and the Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Schools are in Uphams Corner.

The Uphams Corner Charter School was closed in June 2009 because its charter was revoked by the Massachusetts Department of Education. From 2007 through 2009, this school was not in Uphams Corner but in Lower Roxbury on Huntington Avenue
