) gives birth to two twins - Vikraman and Parthiban (both played by Sivaji Ganesan
). Both are however separated; Parthiban is sent to a nearby village where he learns sword fighting from his adopted parents whereas Vikraman stays back to be the prince. Because their father died before they were born, Vikraman (who is then brought up his father's evil ministers) grows up to be a greedy and selfish king who enjoys only leisure, and even goes to the extent of attacking the city. Parthiban, however is honest and not greedy, but since he loves the princess Amutha (Padmini
) who was selected for Vikraman, this leads to an endless fight between both the twins who don't realize that they are actually brothers (since they were separated at birth). Even though the queen finds out that Parthiban is her abandoned son and begins to care for him, Vikraman refuses to reconcile with Parthiban and continues to fight him.
Eventually, Parthiban gets caught by Vikraman and is put in prison. But through some strategies he escapes, thus reaching Vikraman and forcing him into the same prison. Parthiban then puts on Vikraman's clothes and acts as the king until Vikraman (dressed as the pauper that Parthiban earlier was) writes a message on a nearby plate and after signing it, tosses it out of the window. A guard reads the message and after finding out that Vikraman is in prison, releases Vikraman who challenges Parthiban to a final fight. With Parthiban seeming to emerge victorious, Vikraman escapes on a horse and while running through the mountains, he however loses control of the horse and falls off the cliff. With Vikraman finally gone, Parthiban is crowned the new king and the Uthama Puthiran (Ideal Son) of his mother.
