The murders were brought on by Ferrell's belief that he was rescuing his friend, Heather Wendorf, from what she described as 'Hell'. Rod Ferrell was originally sentenced to death but this was changed to life in prison without parole.

There are some ancient descriptions of the demon and its appearance. Below are a few quotes from a magician who claims to have called on this demon spirit.One early description of Vassago was that he appeared "as an aged man riding a crocodile and carrying on his right wrist a Goshawk. His eyes are hollow and see into other dimensions, but he is blind in this dimension."
